The following commentary was posted in reply to a fast growing Digg story about frustration with StubbleUpon (SU).

Social media platforms are all looking for the right model and balance.  I’m not sure why this user is under review but I hope it’s not for promoting his own sites.  These tools need to be smarter than that, and no value links should just remain lonely regardless of who posted the link.

It’s important to remember this is all round 1.0 on social media.  Kevin is keeping Digg in a very safe spot and I like this tool above others.  But imagine a social networking 2.0 version of Digg, or StumbleUpon, or Mixx, where people who have actually read the stories then post their own recommended best title for the social media post, and also note the most relevant points (like a social media press release.)  Then the best title is voted up, so that a story can’t just be made popular by naming it a top 10 list.  Where the original source URL may change to recognize the original source or first reporter.  Where the proper categorization is fluid and the key tags for the topic are voted also.  Where the date relevance is shown so that a event or time relative story portrays an active news event or a wiki like summary of the entire story.  Where comments aren’t flat and can actually contain editorial enhancements or new information for the story.  A social media site that becomes the core rooted tree for all other information or stories on the topic with a timeline inherent in every post anchor.  A platform where the post is visually represented in both social promotion terms (ie digg tools) but in terms of long term relevance on a master topics visualization map.
SU and other will make mistakes that will all lead to social media 2.0 improvements.

StumbleUpon has grown to offer a wide variety of links and anyone who has stumbled knows that this is an excellent social discovery and social networking platform.
