Edge Quest ContestCisco has created a new online game to generate buzz about the Cisco ASR 1000 Series routers. As the leader in networking hardware it makes perfect sense that Cisco makes plays in the social media space to generate a viral publicity campaign.

Cisco has prepared a host of social media release assets allowing news and blog sites to cover this news and spread the awareness about this campaign. Among the media resources are two videos (See YouTube video embed in this post,) tags, links, quotes, contacts, and the social media release highlights / key facts. The tournament campaign presents a great example of how to properly release this type of social media marketing campaign.

“Cisco EDGE QUEST has generated thousands of players in just a few short months. We wanted to address this interest further and to engage even more players in a fun way, so we created this tournament where the prizes are US $10,000 and a Cisco ASR 1002 router,” said Doug Webster, director of service provider marketing for Cisco.

So what’s at stake? The winner receives $10,000 in US currency and an ASR 1002 Router valued up to $35,000. Qualifying ends 5/11/08 and full details are available at www.cisco.com/go/edgequest.

This campaign demonstrates that Cisco understands the importance of marketing campaigns targeted toward the tech users that will likely recommend their systems to financial decision makers. I would also guess that this campaign runs less than a normal CNBC spot directed toward executive level decision makers.
