Looks like Digg has a new round of funding. Kevin Rose may have cashed in on this round.
Digg has raised $28.7 million in a Series C round of funding. The company made the announcement earlier this morning. Highland Capital Partners is leading the current round, which will see Highland partner Richard de Silva join Digg’s board of directors.
Well deserved - these social media sites deserve funding if they make it this far and show a business model as strong as that of Digg.

Let’s face it, most social media users stay well away from the ads. Regular social media website users either block or blank out the ads on any given website page.

Do you click ads?
We certainly aren’t writing this post to encourage ad clicks and it’s important to state that up front. I stopped clicking on ads many years ago. I’m pretty sure that when pop up ads became popular I grew to hate ads so much that I began blocking them out visually (or mentally) when I was on a website.
I still end up following a website link every now and then that puts me on a website that pops and ad up and if I’m lucky, firefox or the Google toolbar blocks the pop-up ad.
I’ve used Google Adsense myself and for the moderate traffic my site commands, it produces enough revenue to cover the monthly hosting bill. It’s very important that as an Adsense or any ad publisher that you not try and trick the system to encourage ad clicks.

One of the latest outcomes of the rise of social media is the instant delivery of perspectives and information from bloggers. Bloggers actively report the political blog scene (blogoshere) and are now considered in some venues as credentialed news reporters.

Will social media and the online news machine signal the end to traditional print news?
The New York Times Has not Ended Print but what is their next move? Are the executives still expecting people to fall for paper? “Let’s just wait til this whole Internet thing blows over…”
The great thing about the Times is that they are still in a position to own the news channel. Embrace technology my friends. Take what ever you spend every day on printing paper and go hire 50 developers to program a better content delivery system and make your paper edition a simple marketing teaser.
The New York Times Ends Print Edition (as we know it today) will be the headline on June 18th, 2018. This gives them one decade to save the brand. This will either be a great day or a sad day for them - they decide their future over the next 60 months.
The rest will simply be history.

Bernard Lunn provides an insightful post about what direction social media platforms might take to remain viable in the future.
So just how will the social sites generate revenue, create unique social participant value, and support a viral and competitive advantage of the next social site that does it just a little better.
In my own opinion I think divergence and social niche specialization will be critical. The cross platform tools are already present and will ultimately tie or hub social site centric to a brand or user.
What’s your social perspective?
Social networking is at a major fork in the road. Down one road is adding more features to a walled garden and opening up just enough, so that users seldom need to leave. Most sites are going down this yellow brick road and the prize is clearly a big one. But they may end up back in Kansas. Down the other road, lies a future of being the primary repository for your connections (aka the social graph), but with this data available via open APIs to anybody who needs it. That is a utility type model, and as with any utility, it can be hugely valuable at scale. |

Flickr was one of the original cornerstone platforms of the social media and web 2.0 evolution. Today it’s easy to get lost on the this site with such brilliant photos and interesting character represented by the site participants.

Flickr widgets traditionally adorned the innovative blogs as web 2.0 expanded, and was a key requirement for bloggers due to the lack of photo hosting available from the majority of initial blog platforms.
The site has matured and now is host to a thriving groups of creative professionals and those that aspire for some sense of photographic capability.
